Tell Us: Brookline Hereby Resolves To ...

What resolution would you like to see Brookline declare and keep?

We know the routine. The resolution dance.

It starts lively. We boot bad habits, turn to good ones and leap into the year.

Calendar pages flip and some forge patterns anew — exercing daily, eating salads and spurning fatty foods or cigarettes; and some return to familiar footing and the dance reverts to old rhythms.

What about a collective resolution?

What resolution would you like Brookline to accomplish?

Maybe it's more of something. Or less. Or a clear-cut goal.

What would it be?

What resolution would you like the town to make — and keep?

Easy - Quit discussing and sometimes passing embarrassing town meeting resolutions focused on changing the country or the world, and just concern itself with making its residents and local businesses lives easier, nicer, less costly, etc. Eliminating plastic bags and styrofoam is a good example, since it will simply cause those of us who like or need those bags or cups to do our shopping in neighboring towns. And frankly, our town reps aren't qualified to make such decisions, as has been shown with all the analyses that paper bags and cups use more water to make then the others. I don't know if that's true or not, but let the state and feds figure out how to save the environment, and quit trying to act as if you were elected to a State or Federal office. The same is true with debating eliminating the Pledge of Allegiance in schools, instructing our congresspeople to vote against wars, etc. That's just not what I expect my town's reps to be doing. Instead, focus on local economic development, parks, cutting taxes, local schools, etc. and then go home.
