Bells Will Toll Today For Newtown Victims

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy has asked the nation to observe moment of silence to mark the Newtown school shooting.

It has been one week since the lives of 26 children and adults were taken in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, CT. As people all over the world grapple with the tragic events of Dec. 14, America's churches hope to provide some solace this morning.

St. Mary's Parish in Brookline will join churches across the country in ringing their bells 26 times at 9:30 a.m. in honor of the victims.

Patch will also do its part in memorializing the Sandy Hook victims today. At 9:30 a.m., all Patch.com sites, including Brookline, will go dark. All Patch and AOL websites, as well as many others across the Web, will go black and post this brief message:

  • United Way of Western Connecticut, in partnership with Newtown Savings Bank, has created the Sandy Hook School Support Fund to provide support services to the families and community that are affected.
  • The U.S. Postal Service has established a unique post office box to allow the public to send condolences to those affected by the tragedy in Newtown, CT last week.
  • Oliva Browning in Charlestown is collecting sympathy cards, notes and letters, teddy bears, monetary donations or other items before 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21. Volunteers from the Boston Women’s Network will pick up the items and deliver them to Newtown, CT over the weekend.
