West Suburban Community Health Network (CHNA 18) is a local coalition of public, non-profit, and private sectors working together to build healthier communities in Massachusetts through community-based prevention planning and health promotion. CHNA 18 recently completed a health needs assessment (available online at www.chna18.org) of all nine cities and towns within our region (including Brookline.) Priority health issues were identified from the data for program planning, and mental health issues, particularly among the elderly and youth, were prominent.

CHNA 18 will award up to 3 grants of $10,000 for FY 14 to organizations that propose to address mental health issues and to promote mental well-being.  These grants will be renewable for up to 3 years.

Examples of possible approaches include, but are not limited to:

  • Reducing gaps in service.
  • Increasing awareness of mental health issues/reducing the stigma of mental health issues.
  • Improving or implementing policies, services, or programs.
  • Collaborating with other organizations to promote or enhance mental well-being.

Results of the needs assessment showed a need for further data collection. Grants will also be awarded to support research about the mental health needs of youth and/or elderly in our area.
