Former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese to be honored at the Irish Pastoral Center’s Annual Banquet Nov 16

Dorchester - The Irish Pastoral Center will celebrate its Annual Banquet on Saturday November 16th, at Florian Hall, 55 Hallet Street, Dorchester.  The guest of honor on this special occasion is former President of Ireland Mary McAleese.

The Irish Pastoral Centre (IPC) was founded in 1987 in response to a large increase in the numbers of young Irish arriving into the Boston area.  In its 25 years of existence, it has been a pillar of support for thousands of Irish individuals, couples and families as they assimilate to their new lives in America. The IPC continues to provide a wide selection of services to meet the needs of the immigrant community in the Greater Boston area including programs such as ‘Senior Citizen Outreach’ and ‘Mothers & Toddlers’.

The Irish Pastoral Center is delighted to have Dr. Mary McAleese as a special guest on the occasion of their 25th Anniversary. During an official trip to the U.S in 2009, President McAleese formally launched the IPC’s Senior Citizen Outreach Program.

Dr. McAleese graduated in law from Queen’s University in Belfast in 1975 and worked at various levels within the legal profession until she was elected the 8th President of Ireland. She remained President for two consecutive terms from 1997 to 2011. Dr. McAleese was the first President of Ireland to come from Northern Ireland. During her time in office, she worked tirelessly to build bridges between the Republican and the Unionist communities at the heart of the Northern Ireland issue. Dr. McAleese was very popular with people on both sides of the border. Since leaving office, the former head of state has returned to her first love which is law and currently is the Visiting Scholar at Burns Library, Boston College.

Starting at 6:30pm the event includes a Cocktail Hour, a dinner and afterwards dancing with musician Kevin Doherty & Friends. The Brady Academy of Irish Dance will also perform.  A silent and live auction will also be held on the night.
