ALEC L. MELEGER, MD, APPOINTED DIRECTOR, INTERVENTIONAL SPINE SERVICES, NEWTON-WELLESLEY HOSPITAL

Alec L. Meleger, MD, has been appointed Director, Interventional Spine Services at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

He has been a member of the Newton-Wellesley Hospital medical staff since 2001 and is one of the founding members of the Spine Center. Dr. Meleger has also served as the Fellowship Director in Pain Medicine at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and as the Medical Director at Spaulding Outpatient Center in Medford. He has been the recipient of Partners in Excellence awards in 2003 and 2013 and has authored on topics ranging from spine care to nutrition.

Dr. Meleger is an assistant professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School who specializes in conservative management of spinal disorders. He is a graduate of Boston University where he earned a B.A. in Chemistry.  After obtaining his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital followed by a fellowship in Pain Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology at University of California/Davis.

Dr. Meleger's clinical expertise consists of diagnosis and management of spinal disorders through patient education, prevention as well as utilizing rehabilitative and interventional spine approaches.  He resides in Brookline with his family and is a graduate of Brookline High School.

The Spine Center recently moved to the Newton-Wellesley Ambulatory Care Center at 159 Wells Avenue, Newton. Providing multi-disciplinary care for spinal conditions, the team is comprised of leading radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physiatrists (rehabilitation doctors), physical therapists, anesthesiologists and other specialists.

The programs and services provided by the Spine Center are appropriate for anyone who suffers from back- and neck-related pain that interferes with work, recreational activities, daily living functions and the overall enjoyment of life. Our specialists care for the full range of spinal disorders – from simple to complex – affecting the cervical, thoracic and lumbar areas of the spine. Patients are carefully evaluated at the Spine Center through state-of-the-art diagnostic and imaging technologies. Based on the results of the evaluation and the patient’s goals, an individualized treatment plan is created.
