Community Corner

A NATURAL PROGRESSION

Lynn Modell has a new endeavor, she is teaching adults to dance. Lynn has dedicated much of her dance life to teaching the Brookline community. She spent 30 years as a dance teacher at Brookline High School, one of the most robust programs in the nation. She headed up the Performing Arts Department there for years and also found time to bring dancing to area senior centers. Now she has a new constituency. Her classes target adults primarily in their 40’s and 50’s. There are a number of 20-30 y/o’s, grateful to be reunited with their former teacher and even some participants in their 60’s. Many are current or former dancers from a variety of  genres, some haven’t danced but are active and athletic. It takes physical coordination and the desire for the mental challenge of learning new things be they technique or combinations. Lynn expects much from her students, one becomes aware of posture and position, balance and space. Her classes have an inherent logic. Warm up exercises prepare you for across the floor movement, then reappear in combinations at the end, But the atmosphere is always supportive and low key. There is fun, even joy. There is a lot of laughter. If you love (and miss) moving to music you’ll find funk from the 70’s, current R&B hits, 80’s favorites, and contemporary instrumentals to inspire you. Lynn is also working more and more as a choreographer, helping people prepare for celebratory life events like weddings and Quinceaneras with a personal piece of movement.

Drop in and check out classes at the United Parish Church at  210 Harvard Street in Brookline on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:15am or Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm. Contact Lynn at lemodell@gmail.com and on FB at Lynn Modell/Making Dances.
