More About Old Burying Ground
Also called the Walnut Street Cemetery, Brookline's Old Burying Ground has grown and evolved in the nearly three centuries since it was founded in 1717. The cemetery includes a series of tombs built into two long mounds of earth as well as a wide variety of headstones bearing the names of historic Brookline families, including the Philbricks, Boylstons, Devotions and Pierces. A plaque was recently chiseled into the outside wall of the cemetery to honor the slaves buried there in unmarked graves alongside the families they served.
The High Street Hill Association has compiled a thorough history of the cemetery as well as an index of the headstones erected there.
