Letter to from a Candidate: Congratulations on a Hard-Fought Race

Library Trustee contender Puja Mehta writes in to congratulate Kristen Uekermann on the win, and to express her support for the Board of Trustees.

To the residents of Brookline: I am writing to thank you for your support during the race for Library Trustee, and to offer my congratulations to Kristen Uekermann on winning a hard-fought race. I joined the race for Library Trustee, my first ever campaign, because of my passion for an institution that's at the heart of our community life. Your emails, phone calls and your votes have warmed my heart, and have reenergized my commitment to the Town and the Library. I will continue my work for the library and support the Trustees efforts in any way that I can. I will work to ensure that library service on Sundays in the summer becomes a permanent program rather than a pilot. I will also continue my work on behalf of Steps for Success and for …

Brown and Warren: Is It Just Politics As Usual?

It’s been an interesting week in the U.S. Senate Race between Democrat Elizabeth Warren and incumbent Republican Scott Brown.

First it was revealed that Harvard University once touted Warren’s marginal Native American heritage as proof of their faculty’s diversity. That story was followed up with another revealing one that Warren had listed herself as a minority professor between 1986 and 1995 in the Association of American Law Schools desk book, a major reference for legal professors. On Tuesday it was revealed that Brown, who ran for office vowing to kill President Obama’s health care law (and who has since voted three times to repeal it) took advantage of a key provision in it: the provision that allows him to keep his elder daughter on his congressional health insurance plan. Meanwhile, both candidates downplayed their wealth this week as they revealed their …

Ugh, do we have to dumb down our local politics to match that of the Presidential campaign? Of course they're liars. I don't care. All that matters to me is what they are going to do in office.   more ›

Brookline Town Election 2012: Results - Uekermann for Library Trustee [POLL]

Kristen Uekermann squeaks out a victory in the Brookline Library Trustee race, and more results from the Town Meeting Member races.

By only about 40 votes, the unofficial version of the Town Election results show that Kristen Uekermann was elected as a Brookline Library Trustee in yesterday's Town election. The sheet shows a very close race, with 1138 votes to Puja Mehta, and 1177 to Uekermann, with 695 blank votes.  The results also say that 3,010 people, out of Brookline's over 37,400 voters turned out to cast their votes--roughly 8 percent. This was a slight increase over last year, which saw 2,800--about 7.4 percent.  In three of the town's 16 precincts, write-in votes elected new Town Meeting Members, each where one of the 15 seats would have gone empty. In Precinct 11, a write-in campaign secured 28 votes for Shanna Giora-Gorfajn (who is a Patch columnist). In …

Election Day 2012: What's on the Ballot? [POLL]

Today is election day for Brookline, with a town-wide seat open for election, as well as a selection of Town Meeting Members seeking re-election against newcomers.

They will hand you a ballot and provide you with instructions. If you're not sure which precinct you are in, check "Where do I vote, MA" and input your address, or consult the town's 2012 Precinct Index. Not sure where your poll location is? Mouseover the map to the right. With the exception of one, the town-wide races are not contested. That …

Letter to the Editor: Brookline Library Trustees Endorse Puja Mehta

Five of Brookline's Library Trustees wrote in to endorse one of the two library trustee candidates.

To the Editor Brookline Patch: As Brookline library trustees we represent all the citizens of Brookline. It is our judgment as individuals to endorse for the open two year seat at the May 1st town election Puja Mehta. Both candidates for the two year seat would make great additions to the Brookline Library Board but we can only vote for one on May 1st. Puja has been an effective advocate for seven-day accessibility, has fund-raising experience for the benefit of the Brookline libraries, and has shown a steadfast commitment to Brookline libraries. Professionally, she has proven experience identifying innovative, cost effective funding for municipalities. This will be a tremendous asset for the Board. As a young mother, she understands the …

Letter from a Candidate: Kristen Uekermann for Brookline Library Trustee

With Election Day next week, Kristen Uekermann writes in to talk about her campaign, and share her vision for the library.

Since beginning my campaign for Library Trustee the question that I have most frequently been asked is “Why do you want to be a Library Trustee?” I initially decided to run for a position on the Board out of a desire to help the Library reflect the growing diversity of our town. But over the course of this campaign, I have learned a simple truth: Once you start listening to residents talk about the Brookline Public Library, you find more and more reasons to be involved. Over the past month, I have spoken with hundreds of Library patrons and those conversations will guide me as a Trustee. I’ve spoken with a literacy volunteer, who struggles to identify books that capture the interest of urban youth, while meeting the reading level …

The DNC will be in Charlotte, NC, from September 3-7, and local delegates will be there to choose President Obama as the official nominee for the party.

Brookline Selectwoman Jesse Mermell was chosen as part of the fourth district delegation, along with representatives from Newton, Needham, Mansfield, Medway and Sharon. In September, convention delegates will cast their votes to officially nominate President Barack Obama for a second term. Massachusetts delegates are selected to the Democratic National Convention by three ways, according to the Massachusetts Democratic Party: Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair John Walsh spoke about the statewide caucuses. “We have elected an impressive and diverse group of delegates who I know will…
