Plymouth Colony was the first thriving colony of 1,000 Puritans who seem to still influence our state to this day - if not our entire country through the holiday of Thanksgiving. In southeast Concord, Mass., you’ll find a pond with just the slightest bit of history. OK, it has a lot of history associated with it, including perhaps the most famous book ever based on a pond. Walden Pond, once the isolated, tree surrounded centerpiece for Henry David Thoreau’s nature-geared “Walden,” is now a centerpiece for literary lovers, nature lovers and beach lovers alike. Because of its literary legacy, Walden Pond has been designated a National Historic Landmark and, according to the reservation’s website, is considered “the birthplace of conservation.” Today, visitors to the …

One of the oldest exhibit halls at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) is filled with maritime curiosities from around the world, while a haunting, curious melody spills into the room from the speakers. The goal of this is to make unique connections between the past and present by placing two unrelated things in context with each other. The museum began as a place for sea captains to store and share trinkets and curiosities from around the world. Over time, this collection grew to include rare artifacts …

The Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site, located on the corner of Warren and Dudley Streets, is the former home of the famous parks designer, responsible for what we now call the Emerald Necklace. The "necklace" is a series of parks and green spaces which pass from West Roxbury through Brookline into the heart of Boston. The property holds not only the home in which Olmsted spent the last few years of his career, but also the offices and work spaces of the Olmsted Design firm. Stepping inside the building, even though parts of it are being restored and refitted with new exhibits, is…
Looking for a couple of kid-friendly places to hang out? How about some of Brookline's kid-friendly parks, or the Puppet Showplace Theatre. Cool off at the playgrounds or water parks at Emerson Park, Soule Park or Cypress Park. If you'd rather hang out inside on a rainy day--or an excessively hot one--catch a puppet show on Station Street at the theatre.
The Brookline Booksmith is an established storefront on Harvard Street in Coolidge Corner, but hidden beneath the store's main floor is a hidden gem: the Used Book Cellar. This part of the store is packed with old classics, recently-read bestsellers, and everything in-between. If you can find it upstairs, you may be able to find it downstairs for a little bit cheaper. On the other hand, if you have a handful of older books you're not reading anymore, you can bring them in, and trade them in for a new-to-you classic.
