Viewfinder: Brookline's Barefoot Boogie
Dance Friday is a freestyle dance held each Friday at Brookline Tai Chi
"You can go to almost any major city in the country and find a barefoot boogie," says Rose Ward, one of the facilitators of Dance Friday, an event held each Friday at Brookline Tai Chi. According to the organization's website "Dance Friday is a place to dance barefoot, however you like, with or without a partner, to all kinds of music, in a smoke- and alcohol-free space." An offshoot of one of the original "barefoot boogies" called Dance Freedom, Dance Friday has existed for over 35 years and has built up a community of people, some of whom have been attending since the beginning.
"I occasionally miss a week," says Mitch Levine, who says he has been attending the dance for the past 34 years.
Reme Gold, who has also been attending since the mid 70s says she likes being able to just dance without worrying about other restrictions.
"You can just do your own thing. it's not like a club where you have to wear shoes and nice clothes and wait for some guy to ask you to dance," she says.
