The skating rink at Larz Anderson Park got a little bit of a makeover over the weekend—not in appearance, but in name. In what many residents called "long overdue" the rink was officially changed to the Jack Kirrane Skating Rink with a formal ceremony on Saturday morning.
Kirrane has been a favorite son of Brookline his entire life. He enjoyed hockey fame with his play on the 1948 US Olympic team, but may be best known for his gold medal in the 1960 games. On the local level, Kirrane was a long-time member of the Brookline Fire Department and spent countless hours teaching many young children how to play the game he loved.
Over 400 people came to honor Kirrane, who was in attendance, and many spoke about their favorite memories of the man whose name will forever be involved with the beautiful outdoor skating rink.
Check out these moments from the ceremony.
