Today marks the 11th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks.

Last year, for the 10th anniversary, Brookline installed a bench outside of the Coolidge Corner Firehouse during a special ceremony. 

Nothing is scheduled this year in Brookline. But, Boston is holding a 9/11 remembrance ceremony in the Public Garden downtown, which will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a wreath-laying ceremony, followed by a moment of silence, flag-lowering and reading of names at 8:30, officiated by Mayor Thomas Menino. 

Starting at 9:30 a.m. in Newton, a ceremony will be held on the War Memorial steps outside Newton City Hall, according to a press release from the mayor's office. Later in the day,  a groundbreaking ceremony for Newton's September 11 memorial at 6 p.m. at the future site, outside the city's Fire Station Headquarters in Newton Centre. 

These events are free and open to the public. There are two other Boston events for the families, by invitation only. 9/11 Fund. 

BostInno also mentioned several charity drives in the area, such as the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund, working with Governor Deval Patrick and Attorney General Martha Coakley are putting 1,000 care packages together for Massachusetts military personnel overseas.

Terrorists acting with the group al-Qaeda hijacked deliberately crashed two planes into New York's World Trade Center, and a third into the Pentagon. The attack claimed nearly 3000 lives, of which 206 were from Massachusetts. 

A fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was hijacked and intended for the Capitol Building in DC, but crash-landed in Pennsylvania. 

In 2001, the year of the attack, Sept. 11 fell on a Tuesday, as it does this year.
