Local Food Figures Celebrated in Health Department Food Day Preparations
Brookline Department of Public Health honors a number of local figures in the food realm as part of Food Day, Oct. 24.
Dr. Alan Balsam, director at the Public Health Department, took a moment of the Brookline Board of Selectmen's Meeting Tuesday night to introduce Food Day. Monday, Oct. 24 is a day to focus on healthy eating habits and to promote the “Healthy Eating Plate," a replacement for the Food Pyramid recommendations for eating.
Among the festivities, the Town is taking the opportunity to honor local foodie figures from a number of town establishments, including: Allandale Farm, Bountiful Brookline, Brookline Food Pantry, The Food Services Department of the Public Schools of Brookline, Brookline Tomorrow, Climate Action Today, Larz Anderson Community Garden Edible Boston, the Senior Food Program at the Senior Center, the Brookline Farmers’ Market, the Fireplace Restaurant and KooKoo’s. The latter two, Balsam said are representative of the many restaraunteurs in Brookline with a focus on serving sustainable and healthy food.
"The kids of Brookline are fortunate in having a community that cares about what they eat," Betsy DeWitt, Board of Selectmen Chair commented.
The Board offered their congratulations, as well as jokes about bringing samples next year.
Selectman Ken Goldstein added, "As an avid food-eater, I want to say thank you all for educating us about what a diet should look like."
Most Food Day festivities will take place at Town Hall on Monday, Oct. 24. Allandale Farm will serve apples and cider, and Bountiful Brookline will be on-site to talk about growing a garden in an urban or limited environment. The public schools in town will also serve vegetarian moussaka for lunch.
