when i lived in brookline in the 60's and 70's...everything wasn't a condo or townhouse...you owned or rented...and rents were in the $60-80. a month range. it's amazing how obscenely inflated the prices for condo's and homes have become here...it's a shame too..because all the really cool, lower income kids, that could afford to live here back then, have all been replaced by the ones that can afford to live here now..and i bet they won't have half as much fun as we all did back in the day...brookline may be a nice place to live now...but it was the best before all the real estate people took over..and made all the beautiful homes into condo's...or priced them so high, that only a few can afford to buy one...what a shame...

The state-wide referendum vote to end rent-control in 1995 had a lot to do with this, I'm afraid.

oh is that what happened ?...that's really too bad...I'm afraid i haven't been back to brookline or in mass. for many years..i was unaware of that..and the end result of that is out of control real estate prices..my grandparents owned a home on linden street for years..bought it for about $16,000..back in the late twenties/early thirties..that same house now was sold for much, much more than that, but even at inflation prices, it's way overpriced... thank you for sharing that info...
