Diesel fuel leaking from equipment at a Fisher Avenue construction site mixed with ground water and flowed into storm drains near Leicester Street this morning. The fire department received a call reporting the leak about 10:50am and firefighters quickly shut down the fuel valve on the leaking Catepillar.

Deputy Chief Keith Flaherty said it was unclear how long the equipment had been leaking fuel, but estimated that 10 to 15 gallons mixed in with ground water run off and entered a storm drain.

Firefighters with the Public Works crews created a sand dam to stem the flow and prevent further contamination. Soil was also used to absorb fuel at the site of the leak. To further clean up the fuel, Water Department personnel employed absorbent booms and lowered them into the storm drain and around the make shift dam.

The Department of Environmental Protection was notified as well as the Brookline Building Department. There is no hazard to residents of the area.
